He’s a consistently solid player, who doesn’t really stand out for good or bad play. FWIW, I was impressed with his display at the World Cup.

That stretch with several consecutive matches where Arsenal did not allow a shot on target would suggest so, yeah. Also, "time and again" strikes me as a bit odd describing the best defensive side in the PL and CL by a decent margin.

It's a bit odd because while the club game breeds more consistently excellent football (IMO), it also breeds much better and more organized defending. So it can often look "worse" than international football.

The fundamental differences between the club and international game (pace of play, team chemistry built through reptition) factor into it, too.

Spain have more attacking flair. Arsenal have more defensive bite. Arsenal have more midfield industry, Spain more midfield elegance. It's not hard to see why people have been lavishing praise on Spain and withholding from Arsenal, but the two sides are much more similar than you realize!
