Coelacanths known as "living fossils", represented today by two species the West Indian Ocean coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae) and the Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis). Thought to have gone extinct 65 million years ago, one was famously rediscovered alive off South Africa in 1938.
