Weirdly, the sheep characters are mostly the same from the book to the movie. The human characters are radically different. There are some broad archetypal similarities (there's a priest and a butcher and a rival shepherd), but apart from their jobs, they don't resemble the book characters at all.

The humor in the idea of "sheep detectives" is there, but it's drier, and the sheep are terrible detectives who don't solve the case. The solution to the mystery is radically different, dour, unsatisfying, and frankly baffling. I'm very impressed the movie is as slick, light, and fun as it is.

So add THE SHEEP DETECTIVES to the fairly short list of movies that are better (in this case, funnier, smarter, and livelier, though also much more sentimental) than the book they're adapting. That said, I'm still pretty curious about THREE BAGS FULL's sequel, BIG BAD WOOL.

I enjoyed the book until the ending, which was so unsatisfying that I didn’t have much interest in the movie. Now everyone’s rave reviews make more sense.

Oh, for sure — don't let the book put you off seeing the movie. It's quite charming, and the mystery is silly, but not nearly as depressing and nihilistic as the book version.

I liked how inhuman the animals’ reactions and emotions were, I think that’s a really interesting approach. But that reveal, woof. Will definitely check out the movie now. Thanks!

That's really interesting. Sounds like they made it much more kid-friendly. The solution to the mystery in the movie doesn't make any sense either, in that the constable doesn't know half the elements he pieces together at the last minute.

Definitely more kid-friendly, but also more adult-friendly! Just more friendly in general! A lot of things about the movie mystery don't make sense (hair bleach isn't like covering yourself in chalk!) but at least it feels like a climax to the story they were telling. It doesn't in the book.

Just noticed the cover says "Translated from the German" and wondering if that accounts for the darker tone. They gave us Grimm's Fairy Tales, after all.
