Why do roofs only last 20 years? Surely we can't improve on this somehow?

It’s a wonder that we have *any* material that lasts 20 years under extreme UV, heat, ice, snow, hail, rain, & wind, let alone one as cheap as asphalt shingles.

Yeah with the wind and hail in Colorado, a roof that lasts 20 years would be incredible or a leaky mess that should have been replaced a decade earlier.

Colorado isn’t special. There’s plenty of places that deal with worse conditions. If your roof doesn’t last 20 years then you purposefully chose a material that was designed to only last a short time If my roof in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies can have a 25-year warranty, so could one in CO
