...Why would they need to destroy supposedly rare books when there is literaly enough print waste going around that one one old antiquarian told me that they used a truckfull of unsold old books (like dictionaries and paperbacks novels) as a landfill for their driveway.

I've got a couple of hundred stored in my garage that I saved from landfill when my daughter's godmother died. I still have to sort them all and most will end up on my Etsy store eventually. Lots of first edition old kids books, Enid Blyton, Louisa May Alcott, Ethel Talbot, Bobbsey Twins etc

Unless you sell to pre-vetted folk, chances are someone looking explicitly for that exact kind of thing (Tech Bros and Scalpers) is probably just gonna be how it goes. Might be better checking with museums or collectors, potentially including a clause to protect from that fate

As an occasional scanner of books, I can attest that destroying a book is entirely optional when one scans.

I saw a video clip of the books having their spines sliced off, leaving the rest of the book like a stack of printer paper. No doubt they are doing it this way to "process" the books at a maximum pace.

Yes, it should be. It's so fucking stupid that some useless AI company can just do that without being forced to AT LEAST provide the public with a digital unaltered copy/scan. I don't care if the laws view these books as garbage or whatever, it shouldn't be this way at all. Many are one of a kind.
