NEW: For @indiewire.com, I spoke to Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor, Jamie Selkirk and *many* more for an oral history of The Frighteners as it turns 30. Specifically, how the commercial flop drove innovation at Wētā, paved the way for The Lord of the Rings, and was just a whole lot of fun to make.

IndieWire

Peter Jackson and more reflect on 'The Frighteners,' their first Hollywood film, and the growth of Wētā for its 30th anniversary. Oral history.

One of my favourite parts of this piece is getting to go through some of the real technical shit — and how much folks enjoyed how interested I was in the technical shit. There's some really cool technical shit in The Frighteners, guys.

I would love to tell you that I spent a cool month or so chatting to some very rad people. But I pulled this together in a week-and-a-half (albeit, one spent, yes, talking to some very rad people). But hey, look, a reported feature from me that actually got, and stayed, published in 2026!

Anyway, you should all go watch The Frighteners – it’s on @shudder.com – or, better yet, wait for October *when it should have come out*. Or both! Just watch it; it’s fun!

Man, for a horror comedy, the villain is literally *frightening. Loved that movie from the jump.

Just watched this the other day on @shudder.com!

This is brilliant, I love The Frighteners and it's really awesome to read about how it was put together. You've inspired me to rewatch it.

One of my favorite movies!

Love this movie
