This is a sorry affair. I had not heard of Arday before this, but I know Nathan Cofnas is an arse and his output risible and vapid. It strikes me that nether should ever have been employed if good scholarship is important to a serious institution.

There are branches of academia within formal academic institutions which are intellectually weak, annoying and self serving.

It is a shame that all academia should be stained by its weakest components. And it is a shame that those weaknesses become targets for ideological opponents to all academia or good scholarship.

I honestly don't think that's especially fair on sociology; there is currently a plague of fake data and irreproducible results in the kinds of genetics and bioinformatics papers my husband peer reviews.

I came here to say this (I saw it last night, didn't say anything and then kept thinking about it), so thank you - there's a lot of dodgy data and practice in many disciplines, sadly. Let's not kid ourselves that sociology is uniquely vulnerable or plagued by bad/lazy actors.
