This is such a dumb, petty decision that makes life more difficult for military families.

Well, that explains why it was done; simply to make life harder

No families only operators

Just like closing local news stations.

And all of it is very obviously from Hesgeth and his fuckass 'warrior' mentality. I am disappointed that so many bases basically capitulated though; the local one's separate social media has survived and I have a pretty strong feeling it's because the base commander actually fought back on it.

And it's not just bad for the military families, MWR does so much to keep the typical junior enlisted occupied and out of trouble and he's making it HARDER for that.

It's all around SO STUPID and petty and also stupid

That's not it. Every installation was allowed to keep one account under the directive.

the overarching thing has some merit at a high level, because the army in particular kind of went nuts with every possible unit social media page imaginable, but not blanket exempting post MWR pages from it is peak army brain

My impression was that facebook pages proliferated because offical websites were too cumbersome to keep updated. It was obnoxious trying to get info before I had a facebook account, the official pages were always out of date and incomplete.

And not just that, but it's also a real easy way to boost morale and keep the more dramatic dependents out of the way because they're busy arguing/fighting on Facebook with the PAO and his crew instead of harassing the unit commander or higher.

horny fort bragg was a historic event for army public affairs

If anything it highlighted the importance of having a separate phone or terminal just for social media only.

(Something something, also a lesson device security)

One of the primary steps toward authoritarianism is to close non-controlled access to free communications.
