I saw someone cite South Park (presumably the Chinpokomon and Let's Fighting Love episodes) as an example of this. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are huge weebs. They love anime. It was just de rigeur to play up how crazy and foreign Japanese stuff is for all of the Boomers and Gen Xers.

A lot of people haven't been able to process that teasing and stop feeling the perceived hatred. It's a shame.

The word you are looking for is "racism". Which was driving the anti-anime movement in the 90s by evangelical groups in the US.

I'm not sure "they didn't hate them, they were just casually racist and disrespectful" is any better, but also, nah dude, you're wrong - anime was absolutely treated like a lesser form of media and the people who were into it were stereotyped as unwashed, awkward nerds

Correlation is not causation: people who liked anime who got bullied did not get bullied because they liked anime, they got bullied because bullies are bullies.

A lot of good points already being made here but I would also like to point out that a lot of Americans responded to Electric Soldier Porygon by insisting that anime as a whole is to blame and that our Good American Cartoons would never do something like that Hell, The Simpsons had a joke about it

Some of us were in our twenties and thirties during that decade. Your statement is factually wrong to an extent that borders on outright absurdity.

I dunno: "broad teasing of foreign cultures" is a) pretty racist and b) at the time it seemed to be a lot more serious than "teasing". Let's not forget the incredible xenophobia wrt Japan in the 80s which got people murdered for looking Japanese that the anime backlash grew out of.

People really conflate “things weren’t available here” as hate and not simply a part of history that led us to where we are now where stuff is available. Stuff wasn’t changed out of hate but because they didn’t know how to market stuff and threw shit at the wall until it stuck
