Travelodge - a rubbish company.

Having had my own run-in with Travelodge (*), I can totally and sympathetically relate. Never using those hateful bastards again. (*) Turfed out in the middle of the night because staff couldn't switch their fire-alarm off, and then refused a refund without explanation (until The Guardian helped).

I've had quite a few hotels do this to me over the years, always in London, always the chain hotels and usually when I was arriving late in the day.

Well, there's a surprise. Almost like the company overbooks to ensure its rooms are full, thinking that some guests won't turn up. My advice would be to arrive as early as possible and hang around waiting for your room to be cleaned if needed.

They really are the worst of the ‘budget’ hotels.

I had an opposite experience. Found myself locked out at 3 in the morning. Went to the local Travelodge and asked if they had a room. Receptionist had 1 booked room where the people had not turned up, but would not release it to me, despite it being 3 am! Had to pay a fortune at a 4 star hotel.

You could have experienced homophobia from a member of their staff, like my partner and I did. The company decided to only offer a free breakfast for any other stay at any other hotel as compensation. Not one for each of us. Nope, just the one.

If hotels were held to similar standards as airlines to provide compensation and/or alternative accommodation & transport when they screw over guests they wouldn't be so quick re-sell rooms they've already sold.
