Not quite the same situation, but we booked a holiday rental near Saltash for the 1999 eclipse, a couple of years ahead of time. When the owner asked why we booked so far ahead, we told them why. The despondent response suggested it's not just hotels that look to take advantage of singular events.

Absolutely this. My kids wanted to do apprenticeships. Problem is they just don't exist. Companies don't want to invest in anything, especially people.

Self hosting your own cloud (Nextcloud is great!) is the way to go even if you're not crossing borders. It has to be done right, though and that needs quite a bit of knowledge many do not possess, unfortunately. Hopefully that will change over time.

Adaptive cruise really helps with these sorts of conditions. Just steer, keep your foot near the brake to react to anything too sudden and chill out. Put your favourite music on and relaaaax. You're getting nowhere any quicker than anyone else!

It would be fun to do a really long EV road trip from the UK to somewhere like Italy or Spain. Maybe in a year or two...

I just got back from a trip to France. Destination charging over there is streets ahead of the UK but highway charging seems IME to be lagging severely. Never had problems when driving all over the UK, but in France, prepare to queue!

DC fast charging is anyone's guess as the charging rates and costs vary a lot, but even with the most expensive power and lowest efficiency vehicles, it's still on par with petrol. 3/3

As for cost, you can get charging from about 8p/kWh with the right tariff, so you're looking at as low as £4.32, or just under 2p a mile. 2/

Typically, home charging is at 7kW (unless you have 3 phase), so that car could do 0-100% in about 7.5 hours. But charging at home you pretty much never do that, and it's always charging while you're doing something else, so the time taken is kind of irrelevant. 1/

Dear France, Your destination EV charging is brilliant. You've crakced that one. Your highway fast DC charging, on the other hand... C'est le fin fond de la misère.

My parents have a sofa of insufficient seat depth and then they insist on having weird, hard cushions plonked right where your back should be. I just throw them on the floor when I go round to visit.
