Increased defence spending will boost UK economic growth, Streeting says

Increased defence spending will boost UK economic growth, Streeting saysNew defence secretary emphasises military will be spending priority over other departments under Burnham * UK politics live – latest updates Wes Streeting has said increased defence spending would make “an enormous contribution” to economic growth as he emphasised that the military will be a spending priority for Andy Burnham’s government over other departments. The new defence secretary, in a speech at the Farnborough airshow, did not make any extra financial commitments but promised he would give the arms industry “clarity and confidence” in contrast to the row that contributed to the fall of Keir Starmer. Unless you cave and buy US materiel.

What are you not being told about your Labour MP?This is an attempt to collate a searchable list of details about sitting Labour MPs that tell us who they really are. These are the useful facts often omitted from Sunday supplement puff pieces and…labourrightwatch.wordpress.com

Everything is collapsing, but we always have infinite money for bombs built by companies these arseholes have shares in.

Meaning the bribes he'll take are bigger

Yes mate I'm sure everyone from Tesco cashiers to Game developers will feel benefit of you *checks notes* dumping more money into a big pile and blowing it up with a prototype rocket that can both kill a person AND return to bomb their funeral

Nonsense. Also growth isn't the goal, wellbeing is!

Really?? So says the man who enabled private health care companies to make £1 billion in profits rather than directly funding the NHS. How much will go to US arms manufacturers?

Increased spending will boost the bank balance of his friends in palantir.

Here's a fun fact that I learnt LONG ago: Money spent on defense (you'll have to cope with me being American) stimulates the economy LESS than money spent on other things. Fighter planes are very expensive, while buses and trains and paved roads are much less expensive. They always leave that out.

Also, transportation boosts the economy because people can go places to work or spend money which helps out all kinds of businesses. Buying a fighter plane makes money for fighter plane companies and no one else.

Like nuclear weapons, really. Much more effective to buy some right wing politicians who will happily grift to destroy a country from within.

I hate it here.

Reality: www.rusi.org/explore-our-... "In the UK and broader European context, defence spending is not an effective route to jobs, growth or the economic security of working people. As a result, any arguments for increased defence spending should not dwell on the purported economic benefits. "

The False Promise of Defence as ProsperityFraming defence spending as a path to prosperity ignores its poor economic returns, limited job creation, and the opportunity costs of not making alternative public investments.www.rusi.org

Your local high street will flourish once shoppers are finally able to buy F-35 parts from B&M.

I jest but for everyone asking how, this is kinda it. Burnham wants us to deal arms to rogue states so we can profit off their wars. And by "we", I of course mean American billionaires.

Can’t wait, mine is currently grounded as I can’t source a Froofoo valve for the wing nut retainer in the left ventilating channel of the filler cap.

This is all about Wes appearing hard for the straights. National security is not just bombs and bullets but a happy life and society. Investment in civilian R&D, infrastructure, equality etc produces more growth than military. Being in the EU created more growth than being a hanger on to the US.

Bringing production back to 🇬🇧 under state control to end reliance on the global arms trade & prepare to defend against the WWIII 🇺🇸's starting in a desperate attempt to avoid being surpassed by China, would create jobs while saving bns given to corrupt arms firms. But that's not what we're doing.

I used to work in the Defence sector. The best you can say is that Defence spending does not need to be wasted spending. It can keep good jobs in the UK, with people who pay tax. However, the compelling argument is to keep capability in the UK, because once that is gone it isn't coming back!!

This is nonsense. Streeting just wants other departments to slash their budgets to fund their death machines. Disgusting.

How does that work then? Going to be starting wars for resources?

Ответ для Gloria Preston

Well, it is what made the country rich...

Give people more money and they'll spend it on goods that are produced by people with jobs. More money, more demand, more jobs, more money, etc, etc. What we don't want to do is make more profits for people who are then going to offshore them.

Growth per head ? So are the government killing lots ?

Increased housing spending would by this argument. Increased defence spending just puts the money in US pockets

It's wild the shit you can just say

And the Guardian regurgitate...

Yeah, that's complete nonsense. Spend the money on infrastructure, education, SMEs, or putting more money into people's pockets. Buying more American weapons? Give me a break.

You guys gonna do an ounce of analysis?

And there we go! Another commitment which ignores the downward spiral of the public's parlous position, & maintains neo-liberal vested interests & profit! Despite the rhetoric, there's nothing about this Labour cabal to signal the significant change required to rescue Westminster from opportunists.

Cool!!!! But please make tanks and planes that can be used as housing, and edible bullets and bombs. This way maybe you’ll also meet the real needs of the population while giving yet more money to the Industrial-Military complex.

Boost Streeting's personal economic growth, maybe

Well presumably so would increased welfare, health or education spending. Do would a investment in green energy. But apparently all of those are unaffordable. It behooves the Guardian to point out such absurdity.

Now he can support policies that kill people overseas, after supporting and implementing policies that kill kids at home. Though I note as well that @theguardian.com are also responsible for their role in platforming these policies.

well, no it won't

Hahahaha. Welcome to the new cunt, same as the old cunt. Nothing changes with Labour... and the cunts will be crying "why didn't the flag fucking and crackdowns work" when they lose to the posh nazi.

😆

That's not how the supply chain is set up. Increases in defence spending will boost US economy because we'll be buying shit from there, not here. Labour's cabinet scraping through the floor to get under the bar yet again.

Ответ для Matt Renshaw

Even that is not true. It won't boost the US economy either. Nothing productive will boost the US economy. It will create more inflation than "growth."

How? No, seriously, HOW?

The same bs in any country anytime

Please can we do away with all this ugly, money-focused politics? I want policies which understand that a healthy economy depends on healthy people and planet, rather than the other way round.
