In the 1100s an Irish monk wrote a yarn of a knight who got utterly wasted and had a three-day hangover in which he saw all the visions of hell. It became wildly popular across medieval Europe and probably inspired Dante's Inferno (14th C). "The Visions of the Knight Tondall". Hell is a hangover.
