And its easy to see why. We esnt the UK back in the EU but we do not need or want the old UK behavior back. Thats to expensive. UK had the best deal of every EU Nation. UK pissed it away and gave everybody the finger. UK can't have it Back.

Sadly, you are absolutely right and I can only apologise for the appalling behaviour and naivety of much of the UK. Our UK media, and Westminster’s complete omission to inform the population of the positives of EU membership, are to blame. People only heard of the payments and rules; not gains.

People can be stupid in Population Level. Its Just politics there is No need to apologize. And If there would be a need to, i would have to run around apologizing all the time Just for the shit we pulled since '08. I Respekt the Sentiment though. I hope we can fix this in our Livetime.

Just to note that RO Ireland isn’t in Schengen and Denmark isn’t in the Euro. I don’t think a majority of French or Germans want to kick them out.

Ireland isn't in the Schengen zone *because the UK isn't*; due to how the Common Travel Area between the UK and Ireland works and that nobody wants to provoke the consequences of trying to impose a land border on the island of Ireland. You can't use that as an argument against Schengen.

The perception in (some parts of, at least) Brussels is that the previous opt-outs were a means to keep the UK in the bloc; they failed, so the case for repeating them is basically nil.

Any opt-out will be seen as rewarding the UK for leaving by EU citizens. These same EU citizens will then be demanding the same or better opt-outs and deals as a reward for their country staying. At that point it is simply easier to refuse any opt-out and deal to avoid drama within the EU.

Again, it’s probably an argument that would have worked in a gentler era, but Europe now faces multiple unreliable, reckless and hostile external forces - their main strength is in numbers

The EU doesn't kick existing Member-States out. Not even Hungary when it was at its most recalcitrant. The Rep of Ireland is one the most pro-European countries in the EU, and one that wholeheartedly embraces European values. As such, they'd love to join Schengen if they could. 1/n

Everyone in Europe who understands anything about Ireland understands why Ireland can't join Schengen with a land border with a UK that is out of Schengen (and now out of the EU altogether). There is no question of forcing Ireland out because of this. 2/n

It would be very different for a UK application as a new Member-State applicant under Art. 49. The Schengen Agreement has now been incorporated into EU law and is part of the "Acquis". All new Member States have to adopt the Acquis, all of the Acquis - it's in the Treaties. 3/n

And should the UK want to become a M/S again, they'd need support from each and every single existing M/S, every single one has a right of veto, incl. Ireland. I'd bet (it's a guess for now) that Ireland would make UK joining Schengen a condition of not exercising its veto right. 4/n

Likewise, Denmark negotiated a permanent exemption from adopting €. It's in the Treaties. As the UK had when it was a M/S. The Copenhagen Criteria for accession for new M/Ss mandate from any new M/Ss "adherence to the aims of (...) monetary union" (i.e. €). 5/n eur-lex.europa.eu/EN/legal-con...

For an informed point of view, I'd recommend the recent "Cakewatch" revival podcast episode by Chris Kendall and Steve Bullock. Chris and Steve are both British (by birth) and EU (Belgian I'd assume) citizens, they both live (part-time for Chris) in Brussels, and they are both "EU insiders". 6/n

Despite Michel Barnier's 'come back on the old terms', it's not going to happen. There will be much negotiation, ending in worse terms but still hugely beneficial to the UK & EU. They won't force the Euro on us (though I'd say yes) but concessions we had will be gone. I cannot wait. Btw, I'm 70...🙂
