The steel jobs were to save it from extinction. Uni job losses are not threatening them with extinction.

How about nationalising the universities and bringing them under public control? I know, so radical half the public didn’t notice it being undone.

At least with steel there are economic reasons for the steel industry issues... For further education we insanely did this the the sector ourselves, for no real reason

The right wing press has been pushing the line that going to university is a waste of time and money for well over two decades. They'd be up in arms if they thought saving the sector would allow poorer students to continue going rather than pursuing vocational education.

But steel is an essential part of national infrastructure unlike .... oh hang on, I'm getting a message on my earpiece. Ah

Of course THIS government would try to convince people it's one or the other...

"But academia is, like, so UNCOOOOOOOOL...!"

Nationalising British Steel was about stopping the loss of a strategic industry overnight. Universities are dealing with years of political choices, financial pressures and a broken funding model. Serious problems don’t need fake equivalences to make a point.
