Tick lines are discouraged because they add visual noise without much informational value as most readers are not extracting exact values from a published figure. Clean plots emphasize the data, labels, key reference lines
Yeah tick marks are definitely less noisy than the squiggle axis, so that’s an odd criticism to level in this context. The ticks in the photo here, at least, are a bit small and hard to see though.
