As a fan of Driftglass and Blue Gal, I'll channel them to say that the Center Right / Right editorial writers at the NYT basically get a lifetime appointment. No amount of being wrong changes that. They tell the wealthy people everything is okay through their views regardless of reality.

You're missing his time at The Atlantic, which did more to mainstream him for the Times than did the NatRev. He was stunningly bad during the 2007/2008 Election cycle, and immediately after.
