One of the clear takeaways from “The Great Influenza” that’s all too resonant today is that 1920s culture valorized WWI heroes, but wanted to memory hole the pandemic. Curious if there were witch hunts targeting those who tried to keep people safe too, or if that’s a modern innovation?

If you’re right that the map isn’t the territory, you should be able to articulate clearly what additional objective measure would validate your point. “Sure it looks close but it’s missing elevation and there’s a mountain” Just saying the vibes you have don’t match the data ain’t gonna cut it

I think the most generous reading is that sometimes data DOES miss a critical bit of context or misrepresent reality. The “map is not the territory” error. More often tho, you just suck at navigating and are reading the map wrong. Knowing which is which is kind of the whole ballgame.

Thing I only realized after upgrading our windows, installing minisplits, and buying an air monitor: while well sealed is critical when the outside air sucks, your indoor air entirely gets pretty janky, even with good purification. ERV (with a good filter) really helps
