I once read an article about Inception as a metaphor for filmmaking that made some interesting points and it made me like Inception more, or at least think about it a bit (which the film itself failed to do)

i deeply upset someone once by pointing out its a film about doing things in an infinite dreamscape where the big reveal is people making generic hotels and their office blocks

Which is one of the things that I think makes the 'metaphor for filmmaking' thing interesting. I don't know if Nolan intended it that way, but 'infinite dreamscape where people just make familiar things' could also be a statement about filmmaking, or at least Nolan's kind of filmmaking.

the lack of depth elsewhere makes me think that he really did think that a rotating generic hallway was the creative imagination, sadly. Especially combined with the rest of the narrative, which is "Why isnt Michael Caine killing the man who killed his daughter"
