So I was in a bar in Atlanta last week and got into a discussion about causes of the American civil. war. It ended abruptly when I quoted the cornerstone speech and Texas declaration of succession.

When the Civil War ended, the folks who fought to defend their right to own another human being were left to return to their homes, live out their lives, and pass their values on to their progeny, now known as the Republican Party and those who vote for them. Essentially, that's how we got here...

The Confederates were fighting against much of what we are fighting against today--sending the military to kill and terrorize civilians, arresting journalists, shutting down opposition media, manipulating the Electoral College.
