I suppose my take on the Canada situation is that the USA doing a funny would be very stupid of it, American conservative elites are engaged in an outbidding process, and the combination of individual incentives and it being so stupid everyone figures someone else will stop it is a concerning mix.

tl;dr: Canadians who think there's a master plan being hatched at the Legion of Doom and this isn't nonsensical flailing are wrong and Americans who think this is reassuring are wrong because it's like saying "Don't worry about the taxi driver, he's just drunk" to someone you're sharing a cab with.

I think a lot of our thinking wrt the US gov't is still constrained by what was. An impotent Congress and a Supreme Court cheerleading a wannabe tyrant hasn't yet opened out eyes to what might happen in the future.

Conservatives are playing chicken with each other to show loyalty and it just happens to be about Canada this time but at some point the cars will crash if they keep playing.

There is the separatist stuff, though? It's not really necessary to have a master plan... I mean, no one can accuse Trump of having a master plan. Feels a little straw-ish

"Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, it still stinks when it takes a massive shit on you." -Pierre Trudeau, probably.

So far away from god, so close to the United States

Yes. Isn’t that a famous quote about Mexico?

Ответ для Pete Manzo

Yeah, Díaz I think (who certainly was a source of problems on his own)

Old Porfirio had a nice turn of phrase.

The Canadian quote of our time

Nicely put.

"Don't worry, if you get invaded it will be an absolute shitshow planned by idiot criminals looking to steal everything that isn't nailed down, and possibly supported by the full might of the US air force."

Canada will eventually regain its sovereignty after five years of atrocity and reprisal! It'll eventually end up in the L column of the US Adventurism table, and that's what counts!

Ответ для POGtastic

We don't need to regain something we never lost.

The Canadians got very mad at me when I said electing Mark Carney and talking like Americans after 9/11 were bad signs and they were headed down a bad path and it was bait for the dumbest motherfuckers on this site.

Ответ для Dan Seitz

Like, yes, be mad at Chump, just don't embrace the same hypernationalism that wound up helping his candidacy, especially when your whole country isn't exactly batting one thousand on the same topics that got Americans here.

Ответ для Dan Seitz

...Dan, what the fuck are you even talking about, my guy

Ответ для Matthew Blanchette

I see you got into my old posts and I hope that clears it up a bit!

Ответ для Dan Seitz

Gee I wonder why

Ответ для Birb_at_Arms

Probably because that opinion suggests ignorance at best, but more likely profound brain damage. Also, no Canadian cares what people in a country that elected a demented pedophile think about *anything*.

Ответ для Birb_at_Arms

Because nobody in any country practices self awareness.

Ответ для Dan Seitz

I think you should ask yourself why you see Mark Carney as some sort of political radical comparable to Bush the younger.

Ответ для Dan Seitz

It would be more accurate to say Canadians preemptively unelected Pierre Poilievre than elected Carney. He was the least shit option. His “elbows up” stuff was the bare minimum, hardly the stuff of hypernationalism.

Ответ для Matt Kavanagh

I'm aware of the justifications but A) as an American I've heard them before and B) Carney is doing a bang up job of ensuring a Poilievre (who I can never spell right for some reason) takes power after him.

Ответ для Dan Seitz

About that last part. No... He really isn't. This tracker is from polls by the Angus Ried institute. Which leans conservative. PP isn't going to get elected. He couldn't even win his own riding. Canadians dislike the man.

Ответ для Steve Burtch

And current voting intention polling puts the Liberals at 44%, CPC at 35%, NDP at 10%, Bloc at 6%. The CPC isn't going to win any elections in the near term.

Ответ для Steve Burtch

Pierre Poilievre is the most nakedly fake politician that I remember seeing. You don't even need a strong platform to run the party; you just need to be charismatic. Pierre doesn't have it at all.

Ответ для Steve Burtch

And how does a Red Tory PM lose to a discredited Trump-inspired populist? While Carney is being criticized from the left, he's got a majority and a locked up Senate. Does he know we don't have mid-terms?

Ответ для davenewb

The Cons are washed with PP in charge and Carney’s rhetoric is about as abrasive as a baby wipe. Even still, Americans will writhe around and cry like a FIFA ref is watching because Canadians accurately describe their own concerns.

Ответ для Matt Kavanagh

💯 Hoekstra is the living embodiment of a cause-and-effect denier. 😏

Ответ для davenewb

That man is itching to be PNG’d.

Ответ для Matt Kavanagh

The best part is that PP's base loves him and he will remain leader despite how unelectable he is to anyone not a hardcore Maple MAGA

Ответ для Dan Seitz

* can't be bothered to check if they can spell a name properly * has an opinion on it anyway yank confirmed.

Ответ для Dan Seitz

Who should have been elected instead of Mark Carney

Ответ для Goroloe

A banana

Ответ для Goroloe

This is Bluesky man you know from context I'm gonna say Singh.

Ответ для Dan Seitz

That was so impossible as an option that suggesting it just reveals you to be a profoundly unserious person. Singh had utterly lost the support *of hardcore NDP voters* pre-election. The idea that he was going to be the first NDP leader in Canadian history to form goverment is brain dead.

Ответ для Goroloe

There were enough ridings where a vote for NDP would have given us a more principled and better positioned official opposition than Cons, and prevented the Liberal majority that Carney is now abusing carte blanche. So, still Carney, but not as harmful and lacking all accountability as he is now.

Ответ для Dan Seitz

Just throwing this thread on mute but a reminder that I am just an internet rando and if I annoy you I sincerely do encourage you to block me.

Ответ для Dan Seitz

I don't have a right to your attention, and you're probably not going to come at me with an argument I haven't heard before, so it really is better for us both.

Ответ для Dan Seitz

Go fuck yourself

Ответ для Dan Seitz

More of this fucking nonsense. Shut the fuck up.
