but I can't say it really bothers me. I mean presumably he reads it through first and agrees with it, and enough people clearly like to read it - so does it matter if ChatGPT is better at articulating what he wants to say than he is?

My issue with it is that I don't think it does articulate what he wants to say. Humour is a tallent. Trump obviously can and does make people laugh. Being kind and generous and being thin skinned are not mutually exclusive. It scans well but there's no substance.

Ответ для davy2155

the only person who knows what he wanted to say is him and he posted it... so presumably he's fine with what it does (or doesn't) say.

Ответ для Prof Christina Pagel

Evidently he's fine with what it does or doesn't say. I don't believe it expresses genuine thoughts he had. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't thing so.

Ответ для davy2155

What? Sorry? pardon. Trump has talent to make people laugh?! REALLY? Haven’t you grasped that people are laughing AT him or to HUMOUR him. Not with him! His absence of humour is one of his defining characteristics.

Ответ для Fionna O’Leary

It’s a🤖 Fionna.

Ответ для Fionna O’Leary

If you watch a Trump rally, there's people who laugh with Trump. You might not like what they're laughing at, but they're laughing with him not at him.

Ответ для davy2155

The fact that a minority might share his crooked and cruel outlook does not make it either a talent or funny.

Ответ для Fionna O’Leary

I don't think Trump is funny, I don't think he's especially talented, although he clearly has some talent at working a particular crowd. The fact that he and that crowd and cruel doesn't negate that fact. My point was Biden's post is imo full of nonsense.

Ответ для davy2155

Maybe that comes from Biden's own mind. I think it's more likely it comes straight from one llm or another.

That was where I was going. AI may have written it, but a living man posted it and he's far from stupid, so he knows what it says - and likely knows we can all tell that Claude wrote it. so - - he agrees with what it says - and he doesn't care that we know he uses AI to write his posts.

I personally remain against it but am aware I'm part of such a small minority these days that my views no longer meaningfully matter!

Your views matter!

Count me in with you. The hyper-autocomplete machine doesn’t have an opinion. It copied other people’s by guessing the next likely word and stringing them together, then he passed it off as his “thoughts”. If all you can do is write a prompt, more honest to post that than claim an essay you cribbed.

I'm with the @chrischirp.bsky.social I don't use it. Am not going to use it. But it has to be left up to individuals. If he has AI "Assists" or not that is up to him. He signs off on it at the end of the day.

Ответ для Marie Le Conte

I think it would be different if he was a journalist or author whose authority came from his writing ability. But he isn't.

Ответ для Prof Christina Pagel

On one level I get what you're saying, it's not that much different to a politician having a speech writer or a media team I suppose. But we wouldn't want all the political coms to be written by the same actual guy right? Like Hunter's post contains less information than if he'd written it himself

Ответ для danthesloth

I guess it's not really trying to be "information" is the thing, it's a statement of a political standpoint. Like I don't like slop writing in general but it's also not really distinct from any of the other overwrought LinkedIn-style garbage that existed in the world before ChatGPT.

Ответ для Adventures in Modern Recoding

It's one of the less obviously stupid and obnoxious uses but that's only because it's basically just fluff. Nobody's pretending it's the Gettysburg address.

Ответ для Marie Le Conte

I do generally tend towards “if you didn’t think this was worth the effort to write it why should I bother to read it” when it comes to AI writing

Ответ для Adventures in Modern Recoding

sure, but clearly loads of people *are* reading his tweets... for whatever reason (and I doubt it's accidental) that AI style seems quite hooky, esp for people who haven't seen it lots alreayd

Ответ для Prof Christina Pagel

Bleak.

Ответ для Adventures in Modern Recoding

I agree in part. The majority of people don't write as well as an AI, and if it allows them to articulate thoughts they can't express clearly without help, that's a plus. On the flip-side, the puréed blandness of AI-speak is inevitably going to end up as the baseline style of our language.

Ответ для Pipeski

People won't become more articulate if they rely on AI. I also think people should learn to spell without the benefit of spellcheck though so I accept I might be a little puritanical about this

Ответ для Pipeski

I disagree vehemently. Not being able to articulate a thought is a sign that it is not complete yet, not fully thought through. We are not lacking in opinions, and the ongoing in vivo experiment on LinkedIn proves that no good comes of “helping” people in this way — just noise drowning out signal.

See I get where you're coming from but this sort of view tends dangerously close to "if you're not an articulate writer it's not worth you expressing anything in writing" and while I'm not sure GPT slop is a good solution to being inarticulate, it's also kind of an elitist view.

Ответ для Adventures in Modern Recoding

End of the day a lot of everything, including our posts, including most of this website, is just noise drowning out signal.

Ответ для Adventures in Modern Recoding

I don’t think that is an inconsistent view though? I’m not suggesting mandatory literacy exams before granting a Posting License, but e.g. LinkedIn is supposed to be for professional conversations, which imply some level of articulation of thought.

Ответ для Dominic 🇪🇺 🏳️‍🌈 🇺🇦

I think the current state of LinkedIn shows the value of helping people post their unformed thoughts. Now if people actually were doing what AI bros tell me they do, and engaging the chatbots in Socratic dialogue to explore their thoughts before posting, I would have no objection.

Ответ для Dominic 🇪🇺 🏳️‍🌈 🇺🇦

But it’s obvious that is not what is happening in the vast majority of cases. It’s pure slop, and the reason it is slop is because it is worth exactly the amount of thought that was put into its creation — that is, none whatsoever.

Ответ для Marie Le Conte

You're in good company, it's just that many of us are afraid of our job security if we're critical of AI use at work...

Ответ для Marie Le Conte

I’m not sure you’re in a minority? Or at least I hope you’re not. Personally I DETEST AI slop and how pervasive it is becoming and how soulless the quality it produces is

Fucking yes it matters!

He agrees with it, but is not *him* speaking. ChatGPT (or whatever he uses) provides a mask and a hiding place. Also, saying that it's OK implies that form is somehow independent from content (he means it, therefore the words he uses do not matter) is definitely not OK. Terrifying in fact.

I find this a difficult debate. Unless you are sat in a room with someone listening to the words come out of their mouth with all the nuance and tone when is it ‘them’? What about the use of other tools like a speechwriter or even thesaurus or dictionary?

Corrective AI functions as an editor (not necessarily an accurate one), basically an extension of Autocorrect. Fine. Generative AI acts as a substitute. It *is* the author. To me, the distinction is crystal clear and absolute. If we no longer see the difference between the two, God help us.

Ответ для Philippe Auclair

To be clear I am against using it to generate an entire work. ‘Write me a story about Robin Hood.’ A horrible idea. But in the industry I work (technical operations), feeding it with information and direction and using it to generate a text that I then review is very helpful.

If the story becomes that CharGPT wrote it then quite clearly CharGPT isn't better at articulating what he wants to say. ChatCPT has just said something which he likes the sound of. It's not thinking, it's smoke blown up a derrière.
