Being a Potter fan was always a moral embarrassment because it permits the reader to imagine themselves innocent for wanting to side with the ruling class the very first chance they got. This is why the fandom didn’t die out with JKR’s goodwill, because she’d long since radicalised the bootlickers.

Goodwill was never, ever what she was selling. She was selling your own class system (which the text admits is actually a caste system) back to you, like an Occupy poster from Walmart.

For YEARS my partner thought it was hilarious to casually ask in mixed company what people thought about the way the series ends because he knew I'd go on a diatribe about how the ending reinforces the very same toxic system that created all of the problems in the series in the first place.

I'm an elder millennial and read the books as they were coming, but never attached to them in the way a lot of my peers did. I think maybe because I was raised on far superior British children's/YA lit. My opinions about the fat phobia/racism/antisemitism/etc were not well received for years.

Mine was basically about how unforgivable curses are unforgivable not from the social circles around you but that once performed you can’t forgive yourself for doing such evil on people, and that when you do the curse it cuts your life force or soul a little bit — the more you do the more damage

The only way to stop it is with sad love that comes at a cost ie their magic animal beacons. Snake baddie successfully kills wizard cop and gains immortality — never able to physically die. But their battle draws the shadow demons who easily siphon the tattered life force of snake baddie

Wizard cop ends up evolving into a light beacon, and we find out the beacons are alive, guardians who move onto the next stage of magic and a new round of education must begin for our hero to become the ultimate guardian protector of people. Snake baddie ends up lifeless and mindless but immortal

This theme really hit me during my first reading, when an unnamed wizard — the herself the story, obviously — says to someone “it’s a wonderful day — even a muggle such as yourself must feel it!” or something and my fash detector went off from that one line, the kind of sneering “you suck lol” vibe

It is so unusual to have a protagonist with zero reaction to clearly telegraphed systemic injustice, to the extent that on first pass one is tempted to keep reading just to see when he surely finally stands for something. He doesn't even choose to be a cop by himself.

He's so passive as to almost be a terribly written Hamlet except instead of everyone he ever interacted with getting horribly murdered he just gets a job and a pension.

My first realisation that he was lame was the bit in the last book when he gets made during a frantic escape by using his disarming spell. What a passive wet blanket (I am also a people pleaser)

It was the third one for me, when he contributes exaclty *nothing* toward solving the mystery, protecting himself from an alleged murderer, discovering the real murderer or saving the bird, and then has nothing to say about the torture prison. In hindsight I was a fool to think it'd get better.
