If austerity worked it would’ve worked by now

Prem Sikka

Andy Burnham to make it harder for people to claim benefits, vows to ‘get serious’ about cutting welfare bill. Silence on corporate welfare. 37.8% of Universal Credit claimants are in work. Due to hikes in retirement age, many seniors can't work, claim benefits. Women will be hardest hit.

You don't understand, Edith. It's very simple: Tory austerity policies have been ruinous for the economy, but we have to continue following them until they make the economy better, which will finally give us the economic headroom we need to reverse decades of damaging Tory austerity.

Austerity totally works, it's just that some economic or geopolitical crisis happens to wipe out all the money we saved. It's totally not a profit-maximising scheme perpetrated by an old boy's club siphoning billions of public money and assets into private hands, please believe me, put down the bat,

I love that this knob head, is like, we need more austerity, but I am going to spend all this money on No 10 in the North as a massive PR stunt.

In the aftermath of 2008 and the start of the Tory decade, austerity was widely pitched as saving pennies now to lower the debt for the benefit of future generations. Well, the kids from back then are adults now and have their own children and we're still doing it.

This started in 2008. So 40 year olds have spent almost their whole adult life in austerity.

I realise you said 2008 but I think about this a lot. When I worked for DWP we started cutting back in 2003. It’s so damned frustrating.

Every good jobcentre coach I ever had was too decent and professional not to be forced out by quotas or stress, it must be soul destroying

I stopped working on the benefits in 1992 so a very long time ago. Things were very different then for sick people.

But at least debts have gotten lower over that time, right? ... right?

Oh no! The orphan grinder must need even more power!

We need to develop some sort of super-austerity. No money for anyone except politicians and CEOs

This is a superb idea. Of course, they'll probably receive less money because there'll be fewer customers and taxpayers, so maybe we can subsidise them by borrowing more money.

#UKpolitics Gov spending does not indicate austerity now, that was ~ 2011-2019:

My guy, this is two posts down from news about planned benefit cuts. Do you suspect at all that austerity is nothing to do with how much the government spends and an awful lot more to do with destroying lives and communities, often at enormous expense?

Well, this is the key point with "austerity" is that it is kind of a myth. The fact government borrowing hasn't gone down despite the fact they have said austerity and cuts are related to "getting the debt down" - Austerity politics is a myth about spending and lowering it

Ответ для MJ Quigley

it is all about justifying making cuts to things like the welfare state, further privatisation, moving the budget from those things to spending it on others. Every PM since Cameron has come into office, and been like "We need to make tough decisions" usually before announcing spending cuts

Ответ для MJ Quigley

"Austerity" also while cutting welfare, also came with tax cuts for the wealthiest in society.

If govt spending in 2018 (at the apparent height of Tory era austerity according to this) was higher than in the 2000s then where are all the public services?

Ответ для Protein and Veg and Fasting

Public suffering does however.

it works great actually, just not for the country, or its populace
