I listened to the program this morning, listening to the guests stories the what the song means to them, brought a few tears to my eyes

For me, this song makes me think of my lost childhood and what might of or could have been if it was a happy one . As I get older the sadness grows ,time is not a healer it just hurts more.

It’s a cruelly underrated song - bitter , sad and entirely appropriate for the flip side of the holiday season . We see a huge upswing attendances of people in mental health crises in all the A&Es I’ve worked in . It’s such a dark time when you’re alone or destitute or sick.

I had never properly appreciated it until I heard that programme and then read the lyrics - now it’s my favourite Christmas song

I was nine when it came out and remember identifying with the wide-eyed joy it speaks of but not getting the rest of it. Then I got it and loved it even more. Other than playing songs in my band, it's the first Christmas song I've heard this year. Perfect. He rerecorded it but I can't find it now.
