There is no such thing as a warning shot in the domestic/civilian legal world. There is no such thing legally as "just scare them a little" with a gun. That's assault or brandishing.

Of you /ever/ need to use deadly force (and a defining characteristic of any responsible gun owner is that the fear they one day may keeps them up at night) you exhaust every single option first.

You are taking a human life or trying to. Things don't deescalate from there until one group submits to force. There is no negotiation. There is no conflict resolution. You only reach that point because your or others lives are in immediate, lethal risk.

In summary: Holy Fucking Shit. They managed to do absolutely every single thing wrong they possibly could and are lucky to be alive and that some of them will ever see the outside of a prison cell again.
