Clean, dry hands. Wash your hands with soap qnd dry thoroughly. No lotion, no touching your face or hair or other things that can leave substances on your fingers.

Gloves, especially the thick cloth gloves lower dexterity so people tend to be unintentionally rougher with material - you have to work harder to puck up a photo or turn a page. Fingers let you react to damaged and delicate material faster, such as feeling it tear.

Gloves aren't totally verboten. There are some circumstances where we do wear them (such as dirty material), but for the most part, just clean, dry hands.

I like wearing non latex gloves so my hands don't get dirty, but that's a personal preference. It's a sensory thing.

Yeah I wear them for meat and stuff. Just the idea you NEED to have them to cook is my pet peeve lol

The one time I visited an archive I naively brought latex gloves thinking I’d need them. The curator said hell no and everything stated here. Then they brought out a 800 year old document and I was afraid to touch it. I just stared at it for an hour and said thank you.

I knew about the gloves, but now I'm curious about blowing off the dust. Anything more important than that the dust will just land somewhere else?

We don't let piles of dust collect on material like that. Materials are kept in clean, dry conditions.

Ha! I'd always read it as shorthand for a neglected or understaffed archive, so I think we're ultimately seeing the same thing!

I know you tapped out of the iwtv TV show, but in season two they talk about not using gloves when handling old photos. I assume an archivist got in one of the writer's ear after using the white gloves in a rare book scene in season one.

I liked that moment! It was the first time I'd seen something like that. I plan to do AMC+ this fall and try S3. The premise sounds like it will both entertain and infuriate me.
