When I brought it up once a lady said that abroad it’s how everybody referred to people from the US, and when I asked how they pronounced it she unironically said “people from the US.”
Yeah most of the pushback I got was “well in Spanish they say” and like yeah but that’s a different language that this post wasn’t about, you get that right?
People use their own local terms for other people in other countries, but it’s dumb to expect the people in those other countries to use your local term - they’re going to use THEIR local term
And if you’re using a deliberately obnoxious term, of course people won’t agree to call themselves that
