The thing that Market Fundamentalists just don't get is that "the market's" way of "naturally" achieving desireable results for society IS producing liberal/socdem regulatory states that implement corrections to market failures.

Among the worst ideas floating around is that "the free market" will naturally achieve desirable results for society. No, it won't, not even in theory, much less in practice. Markets don't optimize "good for society" unless you make them.

Like, what's really funny about American "Capitalism" is that it's a religion, and basically all of its intellectual issues are just 20th century rehashes of classic theological discourses.

The market fundamentalist's refusal to acknowledge market failures is just theodicy ("if G-d is all good, then why bad thing happen?").

The market fundamentalist's refusal to acknowledge that the state is a component of the market (and is thus no more inherently "illegitimate" than the market) is just a rehash of the debates around Spinozan pantheism ("if G-d is all-encompassing, then how can there be anything that isn't G-d?")

The Keynes-Mises debate ("the market corrects itself in the long-run" vs. "in the long-run we're all dead") is essentially just a redevelopment of Kabbalah from first principles ("humankind is the vehicle through which 'G-d' creates")

Reminded of the scene in Mistborn where the main character asks god "why haven't you done anything to help?" And god responds "I did do something to help. I sent you." The market DOES have a mechanism for realigning incentives for the social welfare. It's called the state. It's called Democracy.

Just, generally speaking, the Market Fundamentalist's cognitive error here is a very common one — the belief that there is a legitimate distinction to be made between what is and isn't "natural." There is nothing "natural" about the market, and there is nothing "unnatural" about human action.

"Nature" evolved us to want to pursue fairness and social equity (which has been pretty conclusively demonstrated by Behavioral Econ, Evolutionary Psych, and Anthropology). The democratic state is nothing more than an expression of this collective want.
