Was this some PETA bullshit, cause this feels like PETA bullshit

Ответ для Just Woodley

I don't know but PETA actually helped push through one of our very best laws (making it legal to harvest roadkill) so I wouldn't blame them here without evidence

Ответ для Robert Evans (the Only Robert Evans)

That is... A fair point. Looks like I've got some digging to do

How do your harvesting roadkill laws work? I imagine they would have to be very specific, due to the potential of pathogen spread.

Ответ для Busto Mundo

If it's anything like Iowa, you get put on a call list and when there is a vehicle vs animal accident, where law enforcement is called, whomever is next in line, they go to pick up the animal, law enforcement will tag the animal and you go and process it. So the kill is relatively recent.

Ответ для Just Woodley

That's a better system than here in Germany. We have to figure out who has the hunting rights on that particular patch of street and call them because it belongs to them.

Ответ для Patrick

German government unaware of the usage of easements beyond transportation?

Ответ для Just Woodley

No, maybe. If you report, the police will help you. The thing is that the hunting rights on every square meter belongs to someone. Those people are usually not very progressive (using some nice words here). Hunters in Germany are the enemy, no matter how much they talk about population control.

Ответ для Patrick

Ooooooooh. It makes sense, here it's either private or public and public just means government owned. As long as you have the permits and tags you can take on public lands without consequence.

Ответ для Just Woodley

Can be both. One side is the owner of the ground, the other is the hunter. Basically the owner (state or private) gives a license to hunt to one hunter or a group of hunters. So basically every area has an official hunter. To hunt at all, you need a qualification and permission...

...as a rule we hate it, when randos run around with guns 🤣

Didn’t that also ban pest control? No one in Oregon would be able to kill roaches and rats?

The initiative backers wanted to start a conversation. And they truly did. But it was conversation about how those folks are morons, which I don't think was their goal.

Ответ для gillstonecowboy

David Michelson(the primary sponsor} belongs to something called The Sentientism movement. It's more insane than it sounds. They do have a website if one is so inclined

Calling this a ban on hunting and fishing is deceptive. It was a ban on killing ANY animal for ANY reason except veterinary care. So no meat, probably no dairy or eggs (ppinions differ on whether they can be produced commercially without killing animals), no fish, maybe not even honey. It was an

Expensive effort to "start a conversation" by means of pretending to force veganism on the residents of an entire state through somewhat deceptive means.

Ответ для Joyce Park

Vegans learn how many animals per square acre are killed during grain harvesting challenge

Ответ для Blue Heron Farm

Plus like... What do these people think will happen to all those animals that can no longer be legally raised in Oregon? They arent all going to be taken to a nice animal shelter upstate.

Ответ для Joyce Park

If PETA is any example, they're fine with killing them all.

Ответ для Blue Heron Farm

Yeah man good one definitely haven't heard that 10,000 times in my life

Ответ для Blue Heron Farm

Where you think all that grain is going after harvested? News flash, the majority is to feed other animals you then have murdered as well

Ответ для Joyce Park

I don't get some of these efforts to "start a conversation" about things. I get that they want to be noticed, that's the point, but if your campaign makes you seem like a dangerously unqualified group of idiots then that's where the conversation is going to begin and end.

Ответ для Pale Horsie

With climate change I do think it's good for every adult to occasionally think harder if there are easy lifestyle wins they could try -- like I've cut WAAAYYY down on beef due to prices, and havent really missed it, and it's one small step I can do for the planet. But like it or not, we still live

Ответ для Joyce Park

In a consumer society and people are ALREADY suspicious of vegans for potentially trying to force their eating habits on the wider population -- and shock tactics like this tend to make people trust them even less. :/

I want people like this to know this; I grew up on an organic farm, and like more than a third of the jobs that needed to get done on ANY given day in the growing season would involve some act of mass slaughter carried out against a myriad of different, often cute, species of critter.

Not particularly a fan of hunting, but this prop was beyond absurd. Can’t count the number of times I was approached in recent months to sign the petition.

Ответ для Zoe

I'm not sure what it's like on the west coast, but even under an ideal vegan future, hunting would probably be necessary on the east coast just to keep white tailed deer populations at sustainable levels

Ответ для Aaron

Oregon uses controlled hunting to manage wildlife populations, elk and deer in particular. Here’s a link with more detail: myodfw.com/articles/con...

Controlled hunt navigation | Oregon Department of Fish & WildlifeEastern Oregon mule deer are managed by Deer Hunt Areas. Check here for more details All other big game are managed by wildlife management units, including west side hunts. Refer to specific map units...myodfw.com
Ответ для Zoe

Good to know! So ceasing hunting would also be a disaster in Oregon. Wasn't sure if you guys still had predators. PA has similar systems because almost all of the natural predators are killed off.

Ответ для Aaron

We have predators, but they don't "manage" prey the way people think. Check out Royal Isle moose- hard pendulum swings, especially with hands-off pred managment. I'm good with preds, but controlled management by humans is much more targeted and scientifically informed by carrying capacity goals

I would say this has to be some kind of op but that would sadly be too easy

Ответ для Matt Stikker

I'm pretty sure it was actually

People in PNW cities forget that this is the west sometimes.

Oh wow, talk about a misguided way to bring attention to your cause. Have any one of these folks ever met a rural working class person just trying to get by?

Ответ для R-R-R-Ronnie and the Jets

Seriously this isn't myopic, it's fucking blind to reality.

There is a segment of the vegan community that is bound and determined to make everyone hate vegans.

was this brought up by a white-tailed deer apocalypse cult

Stupid that it got this far.

The families on Yellowstone wouldn’t have held truck with any government telling them they couldn’t kill whatever they want

No one here expected it to even gain any serious traction. It felt like an op to get some "look how crazy those libs are" in the public discourse.

Who thought that was a good idea? Most hunters eat their take because those tags aren’t cheap. I can understand banning trophy hunting but fishing AND hunting? wtf.

Even the most ardent reality based vegans I've talked to said this was a terrible idea and wouldn't do what people claimed as a positive. Pest control ban was in this bill. For people who don't understand, if you want mice/rat based plagues, this is how you get them. Pest control is necessary.

Oregon, we just failed to do a Star Trek, apparently

Oh my god I fucking hate these guys. They are so braindead

In the nineties I was asked on the steps of a library to sign a similar petition. I politely asked to see the text and this guy lost his shit and started screaming at me. In front of the city public library. Corvallis did not give the world the best activists. Some of the worst actually.

It’s disappointing they got as many signatures as they did

Ответ для SheDog of Anarchy

It's because the people gathering signatures lied to get people to sign. I was approached by them many times and they'd frame it as a proposal to "End cruel factory farming processes"

Amazing that, even in Oregon, it got as many signatures as it did.

Ответ для piebunion

So many people just blindly sign petitions that are put in front of them. All you have to say is "Do you want to sign this petition to prevent animal cruelty?" and get a signature. Which speaks to how badly this was bungled that they couldn't even manage that with this one.

Honestly, I’m really suspicious of it being an op to energize the Oregon GOP to vote. (I know, I know. We all live in Alex Jones‘ world now. 🫠😞 it just felt so much like political rat fuckery) They’re certainly the ones who would most benefit from it. They’re so disappointed this didn’t make it.

I don't like these activities personally, especially for sport. But I would never try to tell other people they can't because I don't approve. Whatever happened to standing the fuck aside?
