The more I think about The Strength of the Few the more hideously disappointed I am. If the Will of the Many was Fourth Wing But Not Horny, The Strength of the Few is Onyx Storm -- obsessed with its own mysteries, has fully lost track of its characters, tries to do so much it accomplishes nothing.

The guy can clearly write but I'm fucking begging him to return to the extremely basic formula that made The Will of the Many so fun: a clearly stated problem, with multiple chapters of buildup and conversations with interesting characters to establish stakes, and then an interesting resolution.

Nearly every problem in The Strength of the Few comes out of fucking nowhere and is then resolved basically instantly. Zero characters (including our protagonist) have meaningful, on-screen agency where we understand the decisions they're making and the context and why stuff happens.

I like a big swing, and the Strength of the Few is, structurally, a huge swing. I'm glad authors take swings like this. But I think Obsessions With Big Structural Ideas need equally strong obsessions with characters, agency, and narrative payoff.
