Dark Souls 2: Armor? Fake. Elemental defense? Real but also conditionally useful so fake. Weapon scaling? Also kinda fake. Poise? Oh you bet that shit is fake. Weapon infusions? Real. Base AR? Real. Rings? Somehow the most powerful equipment in the game.

Chris Person

Dark Souls 2 is so mechanically obtuse that it makes me love it more. Armor is basically meaningless and a full Havel’s set has the same damage reduction as a single specific ring. Poise is fake. Your I-frames are dictated by two arbitrary stats that both contribute to a third arbitrary stat. ❤️

What's funniest to me is that in each from soft game I've played, all the rules have been entirely different. I learned how armor works in DS1 and DS2, and just stopped bothering in 3 and on because it's all just gonna get revamped soon anyway.

I think there is a ring you only get if you beat the game without taking damage or something like that. Insane game

There’s a boss that commits seppiku if you beat him without getting hit

You're thinking of the Illusory Rings. One, you get when you beat the game without dying. The other, you get without resting at any bonfires. Sounds super insane but it's doable if you're careful and plan it out.

But the actual most powerful thing in the game is Hex which negates everything else lol

People complained about poise being fake in DS3 when the correct take is that poise exists on a fakeness spectrum between DS1 and 2 with DS3 in the middle and Elden Ring creating a second dimension of orthogonal fakeness

You can really tell dark souls 2 was made by a bunch of semi-retired old fromsoft Armored Core designers because the intent seems to be to empower players with as much choice on statistical variety and control over every little aspect of the game as long as they actually do their homework.

Make master keys a consumable with a variety of ways of getting them. Let you control your iframes and your roll distance independent of each other. Allow you to boost an area to NG+ to get more souls. Make your equipment choices more important than stat scaling. Require minmaxing to use poise.

DS1: Give players 3 starting paths, 2 of which are so unreasonably damage scaled that they're fake. DS2: Give players like 7 starting paths and most even difficulty scaling across the entire franchise, but then lock most of those paths behind obscure knowledge you have to learn and remember.

Many people complain about DS2s mechanics and I get why but also I think everything it does is REALLY funny

Ds2 stealth eternal ring spinoff....

Putting points into dexterity to “use your weapon” ❌ Infusing the weapon with lightning, taking off your clothes, wearing a specific ring and having the bare minimum stats to 2H it ✅

People got so mad at Dark Souls 2 but what’s more Dark Souls than making every single mechanic in the game a prank that takes years to figure out? bsky.app/profile/rust...

I think Fromsoft should be praised for making wild choices because they were making a sequel to a game that had been picked apart and was completely understood inside and out even if the people they were doing it for hated them for it

Also Dark Souls 2 is more the spiritual predecessor to Elden Ring in many ways, so letting talent go kinda nutty with it bears fruit. Kinda hard not to see that in Nightreign too.

Ответ для Chris Person

yeah it's hard not to read Elden Ring as Dark Souls 2-2 like DS2 was *planned* as a more open-world affair, they had to pare it back because of logistics, and it's awesome that they were able to eventually MAKE THE KIND OF GAME THEY'D ORIGINALLY ENVISIONED

Wow can’t wait to finally play it armed with all this info. Thank you for your service. This is why I pay for aftermath 🫡

it's a true sequel to dark souls in that it's designed to be as hard and frictional to play for someone who has gotten really good at the first dark souls as the first one was for new players. it's a massively underappreciated move of loving sadism in game design

Right? Like all the DS1 chauvinists lorded over everyone how obtuse and much work the game required (at the time) and DS2 came along and they all cried out "not like this" and not being treated for their prior knowledge of DS1 mechanics.

i played 2 for the first time earlier this year and yeah, now i'm capable of appreciating how it's constantly pranking you in a way i wasn't when i'd only played 1 obsidianmoonshine.com/public/1-blo...

Dark Souls 2 is the funniest oneI finally properly played Dark Souls 2 and learned it's basically a Looney Tunes slapstick cartoon at your expenseobsidianmoonshine.com

I was a Dark Souls 2 hater back in the day But since then I have seen the light

For me nothing tops the DLC area I think of as "The Ninja Microwave Hallway"

In a game that is literally about hunting down and beating a bunch of stupid people who think they've cracked the code on Dark Souls but have only just gotten themselves stuck as shitty knockoffs of older, actually important beings.

Something the devs have talked about is that all the characters in the game lose their memories and sense of self but the last thing that goes is their goal. Like you cannot ever trust that you’re walking on firm ground and the only certain thing is wandering in a direction.

this is why I find the complaints about the elevator in Earthen Peak into Iron Keep so deeply boring. I interpret it as a very interesting way to underline that premise. entering a hollow like fugue state and finding yourself in a new place out of nowhere is super cool

Ответ для karlgerm

Fantastical worlds have to be 100% consistent at all times and cannot suggest textually that I the player character am not mentally present in any and every situation.

Ответ для karlgerm

While I don’t think the game is about Alzheimer’s, that elevator always was such a direct “this is what living with a decaying mind is like” statement to me

In Dark Souls 3 you can block with a great shield while walking in lava and you will lose less health then you would if you equipped fire resist gear. Just a very funny series.

The best Japanese games have insanely obtuse mechanics and unnecessary friction and are great because of those things don't @ me

damn is this why i had so much trouble doing dmg trying to play as a dex build where is this info from

My favorite thing about DS2 is how Majula absolutely fucking dogwalks Firelink Shrine and honestly Hunter's Dream. It's a hub I actually enjoying spending time in and developing instead of a dreary dungeon full of suicidal assholes.

this game is for Freaks. it is so special

this seems bad to me

Weirdly enough I really preferred the way that DS2 did poise over DS3, especially in PVP, which near as I could tell had poise only prevent attacks from being interrupted while being hit vs DS2 where you could get hit in neutral and not flinch with enough poise.

Ответ для ferry

Forget how it works in DS3 but DS1 poise would instantly refill like 5 seconds after the stagger animation minus a set value vs. DS2 where it’s hella slow. Way easier to get stagger locked by multiple foes, which is more interesting.

Ответ для Chris Person

ds3 poise only existed during the downswing of attacks and heavy weapons had more poise than others, iirc
