if you work an office/email job an interesting exercise is to think of the number of times in a work day when you are effectively allowed to fuck up, either because you have the time to fix it or because someone else will catch it and it's not a big deal. Restaurant workers can fuck up like zero

Thinking about this and the very real disparity in how much more expensive the desk job mistakes can be and yet the reaction is usually much more.. civil. At least in healthy companies. Still possible for a client to get shouty

if a waiter hears your order wrong or writes down your order wrong or puts in your order wrong it's a Big Problem, if they don't check in or turn their tables over fast enough it's a Big Problem. If they put in the wrong order but remember five minutes later it's a Big Problem

If you are a waiter and you fuck up one order every day for a week people at your restaurant will be like okay this person is a bad waiter

I literally cannot remember the last time a waiter fucked up my order. Meanwhile every day I receive work emails that would make God abandon creation

there is a nitwit at my company who regularly costs the org millions of dollars because they are a terrible manager and can't do work on time and to budget. in contrast, even if a waiter gets my order wrong, i still get edible food!!

My wife has been served glutenous food after choosing the gluten free option. Do that with a peanut allergy and getting it wrong could kill someone.

I am cracking up that I'm reading this thread while my son is watching one of the many Grover Waiter segments on classic sesame Street
