10 years ago today Philando Castile was murdered by St Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez, who never faced criminal consequences and walks free to this day. As do his colleagues who when they showed up didn’t render medical aid to Philando, choosing to console a crying Officer Yanez instead.

On this day in 2016, 32-year-old Philando Castile was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop for a broken taillight in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.

This occurred right after my kid finished kindergarten where Philando worked. She learned at 6 that her buddy, ‘Mr. Phil,’ the warm and loving man in her lunchroom, who joked and knew their names, the one with the brightest smile who gave hugs, was killed by a cop. RIP Philando. You deserved better.

The media attention likes to focus solely on the individual as if this specific police murder exists in a vacuum, but Philando Castile was stopped at least **52 times** by police for minor traffic violations leading up to his murder, showing that this was far from some aberration.

10 years is a significant marker of time and a stark reminder of how we have continuously failed as a society to prevent these police murders from happening. Just think of how many other people, just here in the Twin Cities alone, that have been killed by the police in the 10 years since then.
