With the cancellation of 95 ave I’m left thinking about all we got out of the “100m” active transportation expansion. 🧵

The westend really does seem to be the loser here. In terms of main arteries to the core, I find the southside really pretty okay Crossing into the westend and across the Yellowhead I think is really where our citywide cycling gaps are

Who was the westend's councillor through all of this? Ah...

It’s frustrating cause he acts supportive so you get your hopes up. During the budget town halls he was telling me we just needed to get everyone together on 95 ave to talk about priorities… then it gets unceremoniously killed during summer break

He's a big nothing for a bunch of reasons. But he killed 95ave 11 years ago and promised to replace it. He killed the old bike plan, and let admin waste 6 years replacing it. And the west bikeroute problems would be solved if he'd just told them to build westlrt with mups. bsky.app/profile/newf...

In 2015 3 high-profile bike lanes (97st, 106st, 95ave) were removed by a gaggle of lazy, populist councilors. Knack made several promises to fix the problem, but 95ave STILL isn't done. The lane that Nickel(!) removed got replaced before Knack's. edmontonjournal.com/news/local-n...

I'm glad that he's called out the province recently. But his actual history of doing anything for his ward or Edmonton is just promises and blogposts.

I missed those cancellations. When and why did they get cancelled?

They haven’t said officially. A memo was sent out over council’s summer recess. Council blames admin, admin blames council for sending the message on parking and everyone blames the UCP. I also have to feel that cost plays a factor. Delay and paying for parking leads to cuts elsewhere.

Going through the network expansion website today and seeing that we've only actually built 2.6 km of protected bike lanes through this plan almost 4 years after approving funding is just so discouraging.

95 ave represented a core east/west route. (Note that blue routes do not have infrastructure) Without it we are left with only 100ave which ends at Crestwood. This also leaves a streetcar stop without any bike connection. Zero foresight.

Callingwood got no meaningful step up in safety vs just riding on the sidewalk. The crossing at the library/arena is even painted. This area has potential to be a cycling hot spot with so many amenities but it’s surrounded by unpleasant fast roads.

The short Elmwood section hasn’t started. This is a good connection since the area has a number of schools and will eventually be connected to the LRT.

The south portion of 163 street is a welcome addition but underwhelming especially as you get closer to 87 ave and the LRT where it converts to a bikeway. The north portion is a disaster which randomly ends leaving a gap between stony plain road and 100 ave.

107 ave seems to be the project the city is holding up as a win. I have serious doubts that council/admin has the guts to make this safe. Intersections including at the roundabout will have to be seriously improved. Level crossings added and restricted turns.

The cancelled Grovenor and small SUP in Glenora just highlights the failures of this project. Years of momentum were thrown away without any meaningful safety improvements for an entire quadrant of the city.

Knack has always believed that his job is to have perfect attendance, while not actually accomplishing anything.
