I'm never entirely sure if McGonagall was genuine or doing a bit or not. A good film could have fun with that ambiguity.

Yes, I have often wondered whether he was in on the joke. Look at the titles of his books: Poetic Gems, More Poetic Gems, Last Poetic Gems. Bit of a self-pisstake?

He used to lose his temper when people laughed at his poetry and he once sued someone for disagreeing with his definition of a word, so I am guessing not. His books were paid for by others, who may have chosen or influenced the titles, playing on McGonagall's vanity.

I am pretty sure he was genuine. I find his story really tragic, with people taking advantage of his insecurities for their own amusement. Actually, there are loads of film possibilities here!
