A Canadian friend once asked me "Isn't it traumatic to go to a public space where someone was shot?" and I honestly had to laugh, because I can't think of a public place that I'm 100% confident *hasn't* had a shooting. It's part of why so many Americans are terrified of cities and public spaces.

My country relatives (most of whom own guns) are afraid of cities. I visit their rural town, and while driving remember how every single stretch of road there has had a DUI death in semi-recent history.

Here in largely gun free UK people from many parts of the country are afraid of London: simply because the right wing press and social media feeds them a constant diet of 'violent London' stories which don't reflect reality

Many country people seem strangely afflicted with the notion that it's somehow unfair to them if a person's vote has the same weight regardless of how near or far their neighbors are. Some of them want city people's votes to count for less simply because they're closer neighbors. That's so fucked.

They want land, and the landowners, to be more important than non-landowners.

The country people I've known who are most afraid of cities are also usually the ones who are most racist, closeted or otherwise. For them, the notion of "people having guns" is strangely OK in the country then suddenly not-OK in the city.

I'd feel much safer with the Black Panthers around than with the Proud Boys / Oaf Tweakers / Patriot Front. One's a force for social justice, the others are just white supremacist gangs that need to be taken out like the trash.

Absolutely. But then I have been on the Aryan Nations/White Aryan Resistance "Traitors to the White Race" Death List for decades. So cops and fascists are a direct threat. LOL The Black Panthers, the Huey Newton Gun Club and such are fellow travelers.

Watching people think they'll get out of this peacefully in the US is like watching newbie campers be amused and happy to see a grizzly snuffling back and forth as it approaches their campsite, pretending to be just a big fluffy huggable teddy bear. A gross failure to recognize a serious threat.
