One of my writing teachers told me she used to be in a writing group where everyone else was a better writer than she was, and none of them had careers, and she did, because they stopped, and she didn’t. It’s like one of the only parts we can control!

Oh, and skunks can use their spray ability 1d4+4 times per day, after which they have to wait 1d6+8 days to recharge. RPG creatures, I tells ya!

Just learned that skunks can spray in either a 30-foot line or a 15-foot-diameter area of effect centered on them, and I don't think I've ever heard of an animal more obviously operating by tabletop RPG rules. (Thanks to @davekellett.bsky.social on @comiclab.bsky.social for the education.)

A Canadian friend once asked me "Isn't it traumatic to go to a public space where someone was shot?" and I honestly had to laugh, because I can't think of a public place that I'm 100% confident *hasn't* had a shooting. It's part of why so many Americans are terrified of cities and public spaces.

Other countries also have angry teens and gang violence. But they don't have a lot of two-year-olds catching unintended stab wounds at a fucking food festival.

The fact that the mass shooting in Seattle yesterday now looks to be several teens shooting at each other is an even greater indictment of American gun culture. This isn't about dedicated murderers or terrorists. This is about having so many guns around that 15-year-old dipshits can get them easily.

I think that for all the advice of jaded midlisters, it's just really counterintuitive for young writers (or at least for me) that you can do everything right, be perfectly positioned, and still never hit big. And that it's in fact *the most common outcome*.

Right? It's been weird to realize that a part of me was still holding onto the dream of being one of those authors who becomes a huge celebrity at 30... despite being 42. Now I just hope to be one of those "overnight successes" where folks are like "actually, he's been doing this for 20 years..." 😆
