It works *so well* as a satire of that kind of political espionage thriller. It's crammed so full of stock characters and situations that happen in those films, and then the reveal at the end works as a kind of metatextual commentary on it, as much as we (and Oshii, clearly) love them.

The original manga for gits. The manga and recent anime that focuses on is way more comedic, actiony and ecchi while having the cyberpunk times. The movie vastly changed that to a more serious tone influenced by blade runner which also works. Both versions are good but these aren’t only design

The 1995 film was unintentionally hilarious due to how desperately serious it took itself. (Alongside other examples of talking head, purgatorial tedium from the 1990s like the Patlabor movies and that one with the dodgy Germanic imagery, machineguns and daft dog allusions.)

The movies are stand alone from the original TV show, but I'd say watch the first two and if you like them watch the TV show. There's a lot of comedy in the TV show, the third movie is a kind of noir detective story.

i wont say it's 10/10 but a lot of oshii's work is one of hose deals where it was groundbreaking on debut but plain now. oshii loves to make movies like stuff made by Andrei Tarkovsky which is slow paced on purpose and images above plot
