Maybe the consumer price index isn't as great of an indicator of inflation as it used to be when more and more of us are "poor" while the rich are astronomically rich. Or maybe the dissatisfaction with inflation hits harder when you've got trillionaires out here telling us to eat more beans.

People keep saying “It’s inflation you moron” but this is literally the unexplained growth in economic pessimism AFTER YOU CONTROL FOR INFLATION. That’s what “residual” means: the error left over that the model (which includes inflation) can’t account for. That’s why it’s bizarre.
