Setting is far sci-fi, galactic contenders and such...yet physical currency is still very much a thing, and so is there a demand to make sure it's maintained, legitimate means or not. Tech has also evolved to where clone populations are entirely possible, along with large-scale resize devices.

One of these 'trinkets' could be packed underneath the tinder as it drops in through the chute, looking like a snowglobe at first glance and with some machinery that keeps impacts to a minimum to the occupants. Some glasses break since it isn't perfect, but better than flattening instantly.

The one doing the currency maintenance would easily appear massive to the populace within, just doing their duties yet would notice the 'valuable item' after a scan, easily removing it from the packaging to inspect it.

Most would easily assume that the tiny city would either be dropped or even chucked into the nearby furnace, or, most optimally, held on to in case an order comes through for one or more of the shrunken cities, having shelves that frankly make them look like trophies of some description.

At the very least there's also hardware to allow communication between the varying tiny cities, so they all don't go stir-crazy while waiting to see where else they'll wind up at.
