I've always loved this passage from Metz on the dangers of cinephilia. There's a kind of analysis of film that is trapped by the author's love of the medium; one that always ends up only saying, "Oh, great cinema! How we love you!"

I’ve never liked Metz and I don’t like this argument but it is really helpful to have in mind as we do our GSSB on Barthes who has something (to me) much more interesting to say about similar conditions

Yeah, Barthes is especially interesting in the way he sort of reverses course in Camera Lucida.

Or if not reversing course, at least seriously complicates his previous position.

just pushes as far through the question of what form is as possible

Hm. That's one way of putting it! Would love to have a longer conversation with you in person about it someday. I love Barthes and am always excited to talk about him.

Reading CL for the millionth time for the show and really being struck by how committed he still is to a ruthless formalism but just through a radically different angle. But yes, ready to do it when you are!

I get the sense that Metz is not well liked or often cited these days, but I remain a fan (with some caveats of course).

There’s a Lester Bangs piece where he asks a British kid about the Clash expecting to hear an answer full of punk-Situationist & Marxist theory & instead he says “I like the Clash because of their clothes!” & I’m that kid for films & film criticism
