In the early days, the scammers were much more prevalent, and we were on our own. We’ve let our guard down. Brush ourselves off, circle the wagons and get back to it. Thanks for all y’all do.

Wise decision. We don't need anyone worried about where their money is actually going. That scammer was an audacious grifter. I'm so glad they've been busted. Thank you for making this difficult decision. Trust is everything. 🤝

Wow. Wasn't aware of this. Thank you @lorelei0502.bsky.social for asking for receipts. I think it's very important that those who are able to vet these fundraisers to do exactly that.

Indeed: disappointed. You're in a position that allows you to moderate and call out. Instead of doing either, you retreat to a cemented position of always only boosting the same few projects with nobody else getting an in because "you're booked months in advance" (by big money projects). 1/2

This was always a risk with Fiver Friday, the hope was it would self police but if that wasn't working then I guess it is better to stop than risk promoting scammers. Sad though.

I understand the difficult position you're in, and I also feel like without a list of who is untrustworthy there are going to be lots of rumors and false accusations tossed around that will be exploited by bad actors.

Hey Toonie team, thanks for that post. I missed the scam part, but understand your position. With exposure comes responsibility towards your community and sometimes difficult decisions have to be made. IMHO, you did the right thing. Keep up the good work, you're doing great. !

Important and difficult decision from Toonie Tuesday with regards to a new Fiver Friday format

It's an unfortunate but necessary step. People work hard for their money and donate with the best of intentions. Sadly, there are always those who will take advantage. It's so important for all of us to do our homework - research and cross-reference. If it doesn't feel right, trust your gut.

Do you know if there's a list (like the one that used to be on Twitter) of scammers?
