Also don't forget that GM used to manufacture diesel locomotives from 1949 all the way until 2005 when they sold that division off (it's what's now EMD). They historically were not as singularly about cars as they are now.

That's like saying the rise of SUVs is somebody else's fault, not the car industry's fault. Because they also sell normal cars. The fact is that they conspired to sell larger, less safe and more environmentally impactful vehicles. They pushed their produce lines and marketing focus to SUVs.
