In my opinion, your helmets are to blame. They give a false sense of protection. Australia Rules Football and Rugby League players don’t wear headgear as a rule and the rates of ALS is nowhere near as much as NFL players.

When American football started, there were no helmets, and players regularly died from head injuries. It was a huge deal most people have forgotten about. Helmets have surely helped reduce this. The problem is more fundamental though, there isn’t any truly safe way to play the game.

Teddy Roosevelt intervened to order college athletic programs to come up with a way to protect players' heads so they wouldn't have to abolish the game. The game's tactics evolved so far on hard helmets that returning to a rugby scrum would transform it into a completely different sport.
