There is serious BS in the outdoor industry that needs addressing (REI's anti-union behavior looming large), so I definitely felt a way reading the full story & learning a/b the trademark implications for Patagonia. The "giant corp targeting activist drag queen" narrative here is pretty manipulative

Like, sorry, but you can't still stuff like this, try to"file a trademark application in September to use the brand Pattie Gonia to sell clothing and promote environmental activism," and expect the clothing and environmental activism company to be like, "That's cool."

the sticker was fan made

Accurate! I’m a huge fan of Pattie’s work; I saw them @ the National Aquarium. But trademarking the (parody) name for clothing & environmental activism when Patagonia has consistently worked w/ them feels unfair; the company basically has to defend the trademark against other potential infringements

Pattie Gonia’s whole deal is drawing attn to enviro causes & inequalities in outdoor access, which is amazing. They knew from the start the name was parody & that there would be specific trademark limitations on merch. Dragging one of the decent corporate actors in this space feels misguided.

The only thing disingenuous here is Patagonia's cherrypicking of IP protection. There are countless companies, local businesses, and creators who use their font and brand aesthetics on unauthorized merch. Just look at any tourist shop. But they chose to go after a queer climate activist instead.

And sending a digital mob to attack trademark law on your behalf in the age of AI feels pretty short sighted, self-serving, and classist.

Oh come on.

We must protect a multi-billion dollar corporation whose entire name and look is lifted from a region of South America at all cost!

Seems extra to accuse me of defending Patagonia "at all cost" b/c I...posted on bsky? FWIW, it's a private benefit & Schedule B corporation; it isn't Nike. Given US Nat'l Parks fees are financing Trump's grift-soaked repainting of the Reflecting Pool, I'm thinking there are more pressing issues rn

Give him a minute to look up what that means.

IDK Sarah if you're pearl clutching over a "digital mob" and a fan made sticker...I think the shoe fits. And agreed, there are bigger things to worry about. Perhaps Patagonia should use their lawyers to help protect our parks instead of going after queer artists.
