I think people also often focus on an incomplete picture of AIPAC's campaign finance operation. they have the dark money that everyone focuses on, but they also have a mass donor base that mostly donates direct to campaigns, either via out-in-the-open bundling or more clandestine fundraising efforts

AIPAC has a mass base of rich older mostly Jewish Americans that funds its shit, though the super PAC arm draws a lot of its money from megadonors tbf

this is just as integral to their power as the handful of super PAC megadonors are, if not more so. AIPAC is the only organization I'm aware that can get hundreds of of real human beings to max and double-max to a candidate at the drop of a hat.

Any sort of serious gun control and reform is dead in this country for a generation or more, they accomplished their mission, and the failure of the Manchin Toomey bill is their legacy

This is correct. The NRA collapsed because they no longer had anything to do. I don't know if the NRA itself will come back in the event that Dems retake the reins of power and start writing gun control laws again, but some org will come back into prominence

I don't think that there's been a fight between fudds and "not-fudds" since the 90s. The NRA pivoted toward general MAGA stuff specifically because the fight to achieve a consensus on gun rights had been achieved.

Gun owners who just own deer rifles and shotguns and don't care about the 2nd Amendment have been extinct for a long time. They were moribund by the 80s, and they didn't exist at all when I was a Boston suburbanite (!!) kid shooting trap in the mid-2000s.

I dunno man. I'm doing an IDPA match this weekend where I guarantee there will be a full squad of fudds only mostly balanced out by a full squad of battle asians.:) The "in between" is where the demo is shifting pretty dramatically. More well to do, better gear, better (self funded) training.

The definition of fudd has expanded in the interim period. Now they're the ".45 or nothing" and "I can't find the dot" crowd and they very much are a disparate group from the modern owner. But yeah, the "I can have my hunting rifle but you can't have your pistol" crowd has largely died off.

Lets add that before Citizens United such bundling was the BEST way for someone to get direct access to a candidate. Show up with $30k of max donations in hand and you aren't getting shuffled off to a staffer.
