Her deployment was totally unnecessary. But I wouldn't want to say that to her family. I'd tell them she served with honor, and a nation is proud of her even as it mourns with them. I'd tell my political representatives that her deployment qas unnecessary. They all already opposed the deployment.

I remember reading about this policy at the time, and admiring the sentiment behind it. Yes, atrocities and authoritarianism are not carried out exclusively by the top bosses - they require the acquiescence and participation of the bureaucracy to pervert norms, including police and the judiciary.

Just gonna say as a Retired Veteran and former government employee, members of the National Guard can easily get out of deployments! Hell if they fail to show up to a drill weekends for a couple months they are simply dropped from the rolls! She could have avoided going!

Bullshit They are not simply "dropped from the rolls" A lot of regular duty liked to tell themselves all kinds of stories about the "chairborn" rangers of the Guard and Reserve, but "just not showing up for drill" is AWOL, and will end in a dishonorable discharge.
