Whenever I see "it depends" my initial assumption is that it's from NYT Pitchbot, but here... well, it's from the kind of NYT headline that inspired the pitchbot in the first place.

"Does trying to overthrow an election and calling on a deadly mob to storm the capital to prevent the peaceful transfer of power kill a political career? It depends."

"But the National Socialist German Workers' Party have taken a different tack."

That’s a Pulitzer-level self-own.

The “analysis” page in NYT is consistently the most ridiculous when it comes to headlines and subheadlines. It HAS to be run by some MAGA idiot.

“A different tack.” That’s an interesting way to say “not giving a shit.”

How incredible? This headline doesn’t suggest that both attitudes are equivalent. On the contrary, it highlights the moral gap between the two parties. « It depends » obviously makes any reader with a sense of what is good or wrong condemn the Republicans, because of course, it shouldn’t depend...

This seems like a fairly straightforward description of the political reality, though. The headline does not ask whether such claims *should* kill a political career, merely whether they *do*. And yes, it depends: Republicans and Democrats *do* treat SA claims differently!
