"Humanity is fundamentally evil and selfish" sounds like a skill issue tbh, even in the darkest times it's the kind people that keep everyone going

That's actually the foundational philosophical belief Abrahamic religions tend to have at their core. That people are evil by nature and are at constant war with that within ourselves. I can not accept that as a reality, I see people do too much good out of the goodness of their own hearts.

Humans are inherently social and empathetic. This is why the douche with no empathy can exploit that to gain material wealth. But do you really want antisocial dickbags to change your nature because they are so unlikable they have to pretend money is worth more than friends?

To be fair we don't always present ourselves as paragons of virtue even in Star Trek before the trend of New Trek always going against the curve. It's hard to be the good guy all the time as a human because one day we all just snap from the seemingly endless number of evil humans out there. >1
